Northvolt’s battery manufacturing plant to be built in Skellefteå
The company Northvolt has selected Skellefteå for the location of its planned battery manufacturing plant. A research facility will be based in Västerås. The total amount to be invested through 2023 is estimated at nearly EUR 4 billion, most of which will be invested in Skellefteå.
“We are very pleased about this news. The plant has the potential to become one of Europe’s largest establishments. The choice of Skellefteå sends a message of strength from all of northern Sweden,” says Lorents Burman, municipal commissioner in Skellefteå.
According to today’s announcement, Northvolt intends to situate in Skellefteå what may become Europe’s largest lithium-ion battery manufacturing plant. The plant is expected to provide 2,000-2,500 job opportunities as well as local and regional development in several areas.
“Skellefteå has demonstrated that we have what is needed for an establishment of this kind. We can offer 100 per cent renewable energy production, an attractive location, a well-functioning harbour, a railway, proximity to public transport – as well as a high quality of life with the capability to rapidly increase construction of the housing and schools that will be needed,” says Kristina Sundin Jonsson, CEO of Skellefteå Municipality.
Hans Kreisel, Skellefteå Kraft’s group chief executive, is focusing on the future and extends his praise to everyone involved:
”This process has been a team effort from day one. We will now start in on the intensive work ahead of us, and we are prepared to meet each phase of the timetable.”
Northvolt’s goal is to break ground during the second half of 2018 and to have the first 25 per cent of the plant up and running and in production by 2020.When the plant is fully constructed in 2023 it will produce 32 GWh of battery capacity per year.
“In terms of establishing a plant in the most outstanding way possible, Skellefteå meets all of the fundamental requirements. We also see a major advantage in being able to use Skellefteå’s renewable energy supply,” says Peter Carlsson, founder and CEO of Northvolt.
